Unlike heating, which is a rather simple and straightforward process, air-conditioning is slightly more complicated. The process of cooling air involves taking the heat away. There are a few different ways to do this, which is why there are so many different makes, models and styles of air conditioners on the marker. It is most common for air conditioners to cool air through the process of a compression cycle which transfers heat from inside the home to outside of it.

Types of Air Conditioning Units

The most common types of air conditioning unit that employs this technique of cooling air are central air conditioner and heat pump units. These types of A/C units are best for those who have a large home with many rooms that need to be cooled. These are designed to push the cold air through a ventilation system that goes throughout the entire home or office into multiple rooms through ventilation ducts in the walls and floors. This type of A/C goes hand-in-hand with a furnace, which reverses the cycle during cooler months that demand the home to be heated rather than cooled.

These types of A/C units are very energy efficient, and often come with energy saving capabilities to maximize efficiency and minimize electricity costs. Another bonus is that they often last longer, and the system doubles as a heater during the colder months, so you won’t have to install so many different units in your home.

For customers who have smaller scale needs, a single room air conditioning unit is another option. These are typically found in apartment buildings, and are often attached to the room which is cooled via a window or slot that the unit fits directly into. The upside to this type of unit is that one individual unit is less expensive than installing a multi-room furnace system. A downside is that it is not the most efficient way to cool many rooms at once, since you will have to purchase and install multiple units.

These are just a few examples of the popular air conditioners that are available on the market today. To find out more, or learn about different styles, call us and speak with one of our friendly HVAC experts. They will help you find the perfect A/C unit for your needs!

Is It Better To Oversize or Undersize an AC Unit?

Both oversizing and undersizing can lead to inefficiency and increased energy costs.

An oversized unit will cool your room quickly, but it will also cycle on and off frequently, which leads to wear and tear on the unit and increased energy consumption. On the other hand, an undersized unit will struggle to cool the space, making it work harder, leading to higher energy bills.

Our certified HVAC technician can accurately assess your space to determine the right size unit for optimal cooling performance and energy efficiency.

How Do You Choose the Right BTU Rating for Your AC?

British Thermal Unit, or BTU, is a unit of measurement used in the air conditioning industry to quantify an AC unit’s cooling capacity. The higher the BTU rating, the greater the air conditioner’s cooling power.

When determining the appropriate BTU for your AC, it’s crucial to consider the size of the area you want to cool. A room with larger square footage will require a higher BTU rating to effectively cool the space. Conversely, a smaller room will require a lower BTU rating.

What Is SEER, and Why Is It Important When Picking Out an AC?

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and measures how efficiently your air conditioning system can cool a space. Generally, the higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient it is.

The minimum SEER rating required by law is 13, but modern AC units can have SEER ratings upwards of 20 or more. Investing in a higher SEER-rated unit is more costly upfront, but it can save you on your energy bills in the long run.

What Refrigerant Is Used in Modern AC Units?

The most commonly used refrigerant in modern AC units is R-410A, or Puron. It’s replaced the previous standard of R-22 due to its higher energy efficiency and less harmful environmental impact. R-410A is also better at absorbing and releasing heat, which improves the overall performance of your AC system.

If you have an older AC unit that uses R-22, we recommend upgrading to a newer model for cost savings and eco-friendliness.
